Laminating Social Security Card?

Okay so I laminated my social security card yesterday and just today my friend told me that a person should not laminate their ssc because it would be void. So I got the nearest pair of scissors and I cut of the lamination. My question is, is my ssc still void even if I cut off the lamination? Can they tell I laminated it?
