How do I laminate or preserve coconut shells if I'll make a tiles from raw materials?

We have A LOT of coconut trees planted and my uncles use to sell the meat after dried and smoked. The shells ended up as coals so I think I can do something more useful and better with those (crafts or whatever) after seeing some in the mall.
